LV Express vi for DAQ doesn't work with my panel meter

In Labview 7 I am not able to use the DAQ assistant express vi in order to acquire voltage signals. The panel meters are connected through RS-485 serial comm port. I can do it using the VISA serial functions. The express vi doesn't do anything. WHY!?!? thanks!

The DAQ Assistant is for National Instrument Data Acquisition boards. The type that plug into your pc. It is not for reading serial, GPIB, VXI, Ethernet, etc. instruments. For those sort of things, you would use the Instrument I/O Assistant or VISA like you're doing now.

Okay, that makes a big difference. I actually don't use the Instrument I/O Assistant that often but could you explain what happens when you use it? Is there an error generated or do you get unexpected data? The assistant uses VISA so the stand alone VISA functions and the assistant should work the same. By right clicking on the assistant and selecting Open Front Panel, you convert it to a regular VI. You might try doing that and stepping through to see what if any differences there are between your code and the code the express VI generated.
