LabVIEW 7.0 Crashes when inserting "Instrument I/O Assistant" Express VI

When I try to insert the "Instrument I/O Assistant" Express VI onto the block diagram, LabVIEW crashes. I can open a new, blank VI, then select the Instrument I/O Assistant from the functions palette and place it on the block diagram. This causes the Instrument I/O Assistant dialog box to appear, and I can use the box to configure the express VI, communicate with instruments, parse, etc. However, as soon as I push "OK", I get a "Program Error" dialog box and LabVIEW crashes. Here is the text of the error dialog:

"LabVIEW.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

"An error log is being created."


As far as I can tell, no error log is e
ver actually created. I have searched my whole hard drive for all recently modified files, and no such log exists.

Do you know which version of the Assistant you have installed? You can tell this by going to your \MAX\Assistants directory, and checking the properties on the file called IIOA.mxw.

Do you have DAQmx and/or Signal Express installed? If you do, these install components that are shared with the I/O Assistant, and there could be an issue with one of those shared components.

We should be able to get this working for you by uninstalling/reinstalling the I/O Assistant from the Driver CD, but I am curious to figure out how you got into the state you are in so we can prevent this from happening again in the future.

The version of the I/O Assistant is 3.0.0.3015, dated 5/2/03.

Yes, NI-DaQmx is installed.

I'm not sure what could have happened to the driver, as I just did a fresh install of LabVIEW 7.0 and everything related.

More info--> I just noticed that I get the same error that I mentioned before whenever I close Measurement & Automation Explorer (Version 3.0), only it says "NIMax.exe" instead of "LabVIEW.exe." Does that give you any more ideas about what the problem might be?

Out of curiousty, what are the minimum system requirements for this software? It is running on a pretty old PC, ~700MHz with ~190MB of RAM (seems like an odd number, but that's what it says).

Sorry I have not responded to you, I was gone for Thanksgiving. This is the very first version of the Assistant ever released. I have not seen this behavior before, so I am assuming one of two things is probably the problem:

1.) There is a newer version of the shared components I mentioned in my first response that makes the I/O Assistant fail.
2.) This is an installation problem, and you are missing some components.

Instead of trying to track down the possible missing pieces one by one, do you think you could zip up your ...\National Instruments\MAX\ directory and post it here? I would be able to find the problem much more quickly, and could probably even reproduce the crash. If you do not feel comfortable doing that, then we can work through the different dependencies and see what is missing.

I have zipped the MAX folder, as you requested. Unfortunately, this forum will not let me attach it for some reason. Every time I try to post with the attachment, it kicks me back to the reply page again and erases my message :(. Perhaps 23 MB is too big? It's too bad, because I was hoping this would give you some clue about the problem I am having. Can I email the file to you?

Can you try zipping up pieces of it so the file is not as big? The directories I am really concerned about are the MAX directory (just the files in the directory, no subdirectories), and the Assistants subdirectory below that. Try zipping those into two separate zip files and post them separately. If that doesn't work I will get with you over email.
