LabVIEW Online Evaluation - Tell us what you think!

The LabVIEW Online Evaluation was recently updated for LabVIEW 8. You can now test drive the Professional Edition of LabVIEW 8 without downloading or installing any software. The online evaluation environment includes custom hands-on tutorials for new and upgrade users. We are interested in hearing your feedback on the online evaluation itself and the hands-on tutorials within the environment.

Check out the environment at: http://digital.ni.com/demo.nsf/websearch/CE34B1339DE04F2086256E930074129F?OpenDocument&node=1381_US

You can also test drive 14 LabVIEW toolkits at: http://digital.ni.com/demo.nsf/websearch/4CFCBE4EBE1CBCAE8625700C007A43B4?OpenDocument&node=10447_US

Thanks for your feedback!

I don't quite understand why you limit the online evaluation to only three hours. This seems a little short. What happens after three hours?

I just tried one of the toolkit evaluations:

After trying to lauch the demo, I get a popup warning from IE, but the it immediately redirects to a warning page that I need to disable popup blockers. My IE is basically in stock configuration, so I would think almost everybody will run into this.

Thank you for your interest in evaluating LabVIEW. It appears that you are unable to access the evaluation environment because pop-up blockers are currently enabled on your computer. Please complete the following steps to continue your evaluation:

1. Disable your pop-up blocker.

2. Return to the previous page by pushing the back button on your web browser.

The problem here is the immediate redirection to a page containing no popups and the IE warning bar disappears. This makes it impossible to click on the warning bar to allow popups from this site. This also means we have now to manually find the popup related browser configuration settings and either (1) allow popups from all sites (not recommended) or (2) trying to find out from where we need to allow popups and enter that address in the "allowed sites" field of IE.

Suggestions:
  1. Create a fake popup on the redirect page so we can use the Information bar to "allow popups from this site".
  2. Be more descriptive on the redirect page. Show how to disable popus in IE and mention the site to add to the allowed lost ( labview.ni.demoservers.com ).

OK, I allowed popups from labview.ni.demoservers.com and this seem to work now. 🙂

Why is the Online Evaluation Windows only?

The LabVIEW Online Evaluation relies on a browser plugin in the form of an ActiveX control. ActiveX is a technology developed by Microsoft specific to the Windows operating system, which allows certain fuctionality of applications to be automated by other applications. Unfortunately, ActiveX controls are not platform independent, meaning that Mac and Linux users won't be able to install the necessary browser plugin to interact with the online evaluation.

I don't have enough bandwidth. Does this mean that I cannot have a look at LabVIEW8? Is there another way doing this rather than "ON-LINE" evaluation?

Sure.  Just go to ni.com/trylabview and take a look at the other options there.

Some flash tutorials, etc.  If you want to, you can also download the software, but with low bandwidth that is highly discouraged.
