Selecting the wrong com port shouldn't cause an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL bugcheck. IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL usually means that there is a driver bug, or maybe memory corruption due to hardware failure (e.g. bad RAM).

For a normal com port I agree.

THe secure govt machines have a virtual com port that let the IT organization get in through a back door.
