Labview 5 application (developed in 1998 on a Win95 platform), to test serial com not working under WinXP.

I have an old Labview 5 application (developed in 1998 on a Win95 platform), that we use to effect serial communications with an old sonar via the standard 9-pin serial port on the rear of the PC.  There is an RS232 to RS422 converter in between the computer and the sonar. This sonar has been out in the field for about 6 years and so has not been in house for testing since 2002 (at which time we still had an old 486 PC running Win95 to use).  We no longer have the old 486 and have not used Win95 for many years so we are attempting to make it work under WinXP but it is not cooperating.  Can an old LabView 5 application developed on a Win95 platform be used as is under WinXP? What, if any, modifications would be required?

Hi Chuck,

You do not say which version of LabVIEW you are using on XP. Is it still
version 5? It would also help if you would describe what issues you are
experiencing.

Thanks,

Austinman.

Opps, forgot to mention that I'm presently using Labview 8.5.  I'm a real LabView novice however.

If you're trying to open the LabVIEW 5 source code in 8.5 you won't be able to, as 8.5 can only open as far back as 6. You will need to use an interim version, like 7, or 8 to perform a 2-step upgrade. If you're trying to run the actual application you will need the LabVIEW 5.1 Run-Time Engine. That is available here. However, I don't believe it was ever officially tested under XP.

Thanks for responding smercurio.  I'll give the newer 5.1.1 run-time engine a try.

Hi max-x,

If you attach the old source code to this thread, I'll try to convert it for you.  Even though not much has serial, you'll probably have to repair the VIs.  Please include all necessary sub-VIs, and please zip the files into a single archive.

I think everything is included in the attached  <  Docking.zip  >  file.

Thanks in advance

Hi Chuck,

Attached are the VIs saved to LabVIEW 8.5.1.  I have also included a few warnings created by LabVIEW during the conversion process.  I hope this helps.
