Labview Interfering with Hyperterminal

It seems that installing LabVIEW on my computer has made Hyperterminal unresponsive or very very laggy when typing commands to my controller.

I have been using Hyperterminal to communicate with a stepper motor controller, sending it ASCII commands through a serial port (COM1). The motor controller successfully controlled the motor before i had LabVIEW installed on this computer. Now that i have installed LabVIEW i cannot send commands. When i type into the terminal the characters i type take forever (sometimes minutes per character) to appear on the screen.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Matt B

Is LabVIEW running when you are trying to use Hyperterminal?  Is there a VI running in LabVIEW at the time, particularly one that is trying to access that COM port or another COM port?

I myself haven't seen any issues in Hyperterminal being caused by having Labview installed.

"Is LabVIEW running when you are trying to use Hyperterminal?"

Simple answer: No.

"Is there a VI running in LabVIEW at the time, particularly one that is trying to access that COM port or another COM port?"

Simply answer: No.

I have also tried running hyperterminal while running LabVIEW and trying it while running the VI to access the COM port.

As far as i can tell LabVIEW is shut down completely when i am having these errors. I will try booting in safe mode tomorrow afternoon, as that should avoid any LabVIEW drivers or background processes (if any exist). I seriously had Hyperterminal working fine before the install, then installed LabVIEW, and no dice. I have a fairly good understanding of how to troubleshoot these issues, but this one seems just out of reach.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Hi all!
Ravens Fan's post suggest that running Hyper Terminal after opening LabView problem is a known issue.  Usualy, with LV 7.1 and WindowsXP SP2, if you exit LabView, you can use Hyper Terminal, while if LV is running, HT doesn't reach to open COM ports.

I think it's a VISA issue, but I don't know the details.... hope someone will clearify!

Hi matt18712,

I don't think that installing LabVIEW would have caused HyperTerminal to malfunction or run sluggishly. One thing you can try to do is to uninstall LabVIEW to see if it changes anything, but it does not seem like it would make a difference.

Another thing you can do is use another simple serial communications program as an alternative to HyperTerminal. There is a free open source alternative called TeraTerm Pro available here. It is a simple program and easy to use, and has the same functionalities as HyperTerminal.

Let us know how that goes!
