Lacking System Resources

I have installed LabView 8.0 on a new Dell GX520 2.8 GHz computer with 768 mb of memory with Windows XP Professional installed at the factor.  We just bought the developer suite, so I installed Labwindows and Signal Express and the 8.0.1 update. We have 64 gig of disk space available.

The file system keeps getting corrupted and serveral services are not running.  Services like file sharing and the tcp/ip stack and the firewall, and Norton Antivirus are producing error messages saying that there are not enough system resources.

Labview seems to work fine.  If I turn off any service that looks like it was written by National Instruments, then the other networking services seem to work.

The recommended memory is 256.

I have not installed any of the hardware we bought for our lab.   Is the operatiing system spending all its cycles looking for the hardware?  Do we need more memory?

Since you are apparenty using Labwindows and don't mention LabVIEW, you should post this over in the Labwindows forum.

Anyway, it seems something is terribly wrong with your system. Maybe there is a driver conflict or even a hardware problem. If the file system is getting corrupted, maybe the HD is faulty! Most HD manufacturers offer diagnostic programs that boot from the CD for free download. Worth a try. Good luck! Also see if all the case fans are running. It could also be that the HD is running excessively hot, again causing corruption.

Is this a brand new system, still under warranty? Is it a system that has been used elsewehere in the company? In the latter case, I would wipe it clean and start from scratch.

I've started using this program to check out my system. They have a free demo for 30 days. Maybe this will get your system in shape.

Uninstall as much of the "Free" programs installed by Dell as possible! You will notice the biggest performance gain by removing everything that starts with Norton/Symantec (I have a Symantec voodoo doll I regularly throw to the ground and stomp on).  I have seen a factory fresh Dell go from being a crash-happy slug to a reasonable PC just by removing the AV programs.

I agree with selmore. North Antivirus does lag your system down by a lot ( if you allow all those crazy services).
This sounds more like a system managing problem rather than Labview's.

Thanks for the reply.

I needed to check.  I can now focus on fixing the hardware and operating system.

I backed down to 512 MB memory and now and the system will not let yp log onto it's domain at all.
