MAX error on Remote System cRIO "No Network Adapter Found"

I have a small network with a cRIO, a sbRIO a laptop (with LV) and a desktop PC (with LV). On the laptop, when I open MAX + Remote Systems + sbRIO + Network Settings tab at the top of the pane it displays "There was a problem receiving the settings from the target. ...." and in the body of the pane (where the adapter info should be) it shows the message "No network adapters found." On the System Settings tab, the General Settings show up but all the System Monitor parameters (Total Memory, etc.) show "Unavailable". Everything else seems to be OK-- I can download VIs, run them, etc. See attached screen shots.

I get the same error when I look at the cRIO Network Settings, yet everything else on the cRIO works OK.

If I switch to MAX on the desktop PC, I get no errors and the Network Settings show up OK on both the sbRIO and the cRIO.

Thinking MAX is corrupt on the laptop, I upgraded from MAX 4.7.7 f0 to 5.0.0 f1 but have the same errors.

Any ideas how to correct (short of reinstalling all of LV)? Can just MAX be uninstalled and reinstalled?

Thanks,

Pat

Hi pwd1,

I am an Application Engineer at NI UK and will try and help you with your problem.

Firstly, can I ask you a few questions to clarify the specific issue. Have you ever been able to receive the network settings for the cRio on the laptop. If it has worked previously, at what stage did this stop working.

Also, do the VIs you have been able to use on the cRio from the laptop involve both reading and writing data?

There is clearly an issue with the way in which the cRio is communicating with the laptop. Please could you try the following steps to try and overcome this issue:

1. Try disconnecting the cRio from the PC and connecting it solely to the Laptop, do any of the settings appear?

2. Check that the IP address and all other details for the cRio are the same on both the PC and the laptop. Also what version of MAX is the PC running please check what version of LabVIEW your PC is running.

3. Is it possible for you to turn the firewall on your laptop completely off and seeing if the settings become available (you will need to restart MAX for changes to take effect.) This will allow us to discount the firewall being the cause of the problem.

4. If the above steps don't help at all please reinstall MAX.

Finally could you show me a screenshot of MAX with the software tab of your CRio expanded. You can do this from either your PC or your laptop. This will allow me to fully check compatability.

Please let me know how the above steps go, I will look a bit further into the issue for you, but we need to check these primary steps first.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for your reply. First, let me answer your questions:

Q: Have you ever been able to receive the network settings for the cRio on the laptop. If it has worked previously, at what stage did this stop working.

A: Yes, network settings used to show up on the laptop. I used the network settings for several months without the need to check or change the IP address. When I finally needed to check the IP address recently, I noticed the problem (which only affects the laptop).

Q: Also, do the VIs you have been able to use on the cRio from the laptop involve both reading and writing data?

A: Yes. Both read and wrote data to/from a RT VI running on the laptop and a VI running on the cRIO.

Q: 1. Try disconnecting the cRio from the PC and connecting it solely to the Laptop, do any of the settings appear?

A: No, same results.

Q: 2. Check that the IP address and all other details for the cRio are the same on both the PC and the laptop. Also what version of MAX is the PC running please check what version of LabVIEW your PC is running.

A: MAX on the PC and the laptop both show the same settings for System Settings tab + General Settings + Hostname, IP Address, Model, Serial Number, and System State are the same. The laptop shows "Unavailable" for Comments, Total Memory, System Memory, Total Disk Space and Free Disk Space; at the top of both the System Settings and Network Settings page is this message with a yellow background: "There was a problem receiving the settings for the target. For more information, go to ni.com/info and enter the Error Code MaxServerUnknownError. (note: I did this but the answer was not relevant to this problem.) Contact National Instruments if the problem persists." All the info shows up OK on the PC.

MAX Version: PC 4.7.7 f 0

                     Laptop 5.0.0 f1

LV Version: PC 2010 SP1 version 10.0.1

                  Laptop   2011  version 11.0.0

Note: I just recently upgraded the laptop from LV 10.0.1 to 11.0.0 and MAX from 4.7.7 f 0 to 5.0.0 f1 and I was having the same problem before I upgraded.

Q: 3. Is it possible for you to turn the firewall on your laptop completely off and seeing if the settings become available (you will need to restart MAX for changes to take effect.) This will allow us to discount the firewall being the cause of the problem.

A: I can't turn off the firewall on either the PC or the laptop.

Q: 4. If the above steps don't help at all please reinstall MAX.

A: If you can help me find instructions on how to remove and reinstall just MAX (not all of LV), I will do that.

Thanks,

Pat

Hi Pat,

Sorry for my late reply, I have been out of the office this week. Thanks for following through the troubleshooting steps I previously mentioned.

Please could you let me know what software your CRio is currently running. In MAX could you go to:

Remote Systems > CRio > Software

A screenshot might be the best way to show me all the software in this tab. I am thinking reformatting your CRio and installing all the drivers and software might be the best way to solve this problem. If you are unsure how to do this I can advice you further. If you have already solved this problem then please let me know.

Hi Aaron,

I've been busy on other work all week and am just getting back to this problem. Attached are screen shots of the software shown in MAX for both the cRIO-6073 and the sbRIO-9631.

I have flattened and reloaded all the software on the sbRIO previously (at least once and possibly twice) and still have the problem. The problem is only from MAX on the laptop; the network data shows up OK in MAX from the desktop PC.

From both NI Network Browser and NI Distributed System Manager run on the laptop, the IP data and everything else shows up OK for both the cRIO and sbRIO.

So, I think the problem is MAX on the laptop. Is there a way to uninstall and reinstall just MAX and not all of LabVIEW?

Thanks,

Pat

Thanks for the update. I agree that a reinstall of MAX would be the best next step.

This can be done through the Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features, selecting National Instruments Software and clicking Uninstall/Change.

From this you should be able to select NI Measurement and Automation Explore. Click repair and follow through the step by step process. This will fix any issues with your currently installation of MAX.

Let me know how this goes and I will help you further if this doesn't solve the issue.

Aaron,

I had previously repaired MAX this way and it did not help, so this time I removed MAX. To remove MAX, 664 parts were uninstalled and it took several hours to remove. MAX is now removed and now I need to reinstall it but don't know where to find an installable version. I looked in the NI Developer Suite 2011 ver DS2 DVD 1 and MAX does not show up on the Product List from which one may choose what to install.

Do you know where I can find an installable version of the latest MAX?

Thanks,

Pat

Hi Pat,

I will help you with this issue. The MAX installation comes with with the drivers disk. At the Features stage of the installation you have the option of selecting to reinstalling 'NI Measurement and Automation Explorer (vs. no.)' I would recommend reinstalling any drivers for your products at this stage as well.

See if this solves your problem. If the problem still exists then it is likely to be due to an issue with the MAX database being corrupt. The steps to repair this issue involve using a Database Corruption Removal Tool. Full details of the process can be found at the following links:

What is the Process for Removing MAX Database Corruption

Let me know how you get on with this problem so I can help you further.

Hi Aaron,

Here's the latest. Yesterday, I completely uninstalled all NI software from my laptop using Windows Add/Remove Programs--this took 8 hours (no kidding, 8 continuous hours). Today, I installed NI Developers Suite 2011 version DS1 DVDs--this took only 6.5 hours.

Results: I still have exactly the same problem--in MAX the remote systems all show "No Network Adapters Found" and IP address and memory data is not displayed. Remember that I have a desktop PC running the same version of LV and it is on the same network as the laptop and the remote systems ( a cRIO-9073 and cRIO-9074) and everything in MAX shows up OK.

I assume that reloading LV would also create a new MAX database, but just in case it doesn't,  I'll try your suggestion for repairing a corrupt MAX database that you mentioned in your previous reply and see if this helps.

Thanks,

Pat
