Microsoft Windows updates install

Can someone explain why LabVIEW 8.5, 9.0 goes screwy when Microsoft sends out Windows Updates for Win XP or Win 7 and the updates are waiting to be installed.

We have a number of automated instrument systems which are never turned off and when there are MS Windows updates to install our systems start behaving erratically.  These updates are sent automatically to the instrument host computer and sit there until someone figures out what's happened and reboots the computer.  Install the update and everything returns to normal again.

Those system have never automatic updates of software. Those systems will get an software update manually on maintenance when the system is down to do other work.
