Model view Matrix Property - How do I get a description of the matrix elements ?

Can't find any documentation that describes the individual constituent elements of the Modelview Matrix.

Would be glad to get a clear description of what each element stands for , which row /Column stands for rotation, scaling or translation. How come it's a 4 x 4 Matrix etc.
