NI-DAQmx 8.8 install failure on Vista x64

As I've mentioned, I've installed NIDAQmx 8.7.2 and 8.8 on Vista x64.  The Compability List states Vista x64 requires NIDAQmx 8.5.

You're right- the version of DAQmx you've installed should not cause you problems.  HOWEVER, DAQmx 8.5 and above checks to make sure that you have software on your operating system that is compatible with Vista and DAQmx (this is due to the interdependencies of NI software and DAQmx).  If DAQmx detects something that it shouldn't, it's going to throw errors and tell you to uninstall the software that is not compatible with Vista.

Be warned- it may seem like you have successfully installed a version of LabVIEW earlier than 8.2.1 with success on Windows Vista, BUT as soon as you install DAQmx you will be informed that indeed your software is not compatible.

*You can have early versions of our software with Vista, and you can have DAQmx, but because of the dependencies, you CANNOT have both on a Vista operating system.*

My comment in the last post was in regards to the second error message you had posted- which showed an error with the LabVIEW Run Time Engine 8.0.1- this Run Time Engine is NOT compatible with Vista and is likely one of the things causing you problems.

Good luck!

The install did not tell me to uninstall anything.   As you saw, it was a cryptic message.  I do not have earlier versions of any NI software.  This was a clean Vista install.

If the software I installed isn't compatible with Vista, then the install should not proceed - or provide a meaningful message.  It is unreasonable to push this back on the user - especially with this being commercial software.  I've hesitated to state this until now, but you keep implying that it's up to me to figure out the dependency issue.  Your software should do this.  If not, you should take cues from your users and change it.

You are right, NI is not the best company at making installers, and you are more than welcome to file a product suggestion (outside product suggestions are weighted more than internally filed ones) to help us continue to improve our products.  It does seem though that based on the error messages you posted Anita was able to determine that you need a newer version of the LabVIEW Run Time engine, one that is compatible with Vista.  I apologize for the time and frustration this has cost you and hope this clears up the matter.  Have a great day!
