NI-DAQmx directory does not appear in MAX after DAQmx installation

Hello

I am currently migrating a Labview application from a laptop to a pc for my company, and I am reinstalling all the NI-softwares.

Unfortunately, I came across the following problem:

I first installed DAQmx 8.5 after Labview 8.2.1, and then made an update to DAQmx 8.7 (with the same download used for the laptop, which works fine).

I am using a DAQPad 6015/6016 and 3 USB carriers, all connected to the PC with a hub.

When I connect them, the NI-DAQmx directory does not appear in MAX. Moreover, I have noticed that MAX has not listed DAQmx as an installed component, but Windows XP does.

I have already tried to repair MAX´s installation, or to connect the usb-devices one by one.

I must say it is not the first time I do not find the NI-DAQmx directory in MAX: I have previously tried to install the system on Windows 2000, it worked with DAQmx8.5, but not with DAQmx8.7 (!) (even if I tried many times to reinstall it...) After the update, the directory was always erased in MAX...

So I decided to move to XP, because the Laptop is running with XP, hoping it would be better... but it didn t...Smiley Sad

I thank you in advance for your help!

Hello Sharter,

the DAQmx-entry appears in MAX only if there is a NI DAQ-device connected with your PC or if you have a simulated DAQ-device in MAX.

So, first check if the DAQmx driver is installed: Open MAX - there should be an entry NI-DAQmx XXXX under 'Software'.

Now you can test if it is possible to create a simulated DAQmx-device: devices and interfaces -> rightclick -> new -> NI-DAQmx simulated device. Choose a M-series, e.g. a NI PCI-6221 , because your DAQpad can't be simulated.

If this works take a look in the Windows device-manager: (For this test connect the DAQPad with a short USB-cable to the PC - without hub.)

When the DAQpad is connected and the driver is working properly, there should be an entry 'Data Acquisition Devices' -> DAQPad-6015 and the green Ready-LED at the front of the DAQpad should light steadily.

If not there is a problem with the driver: Go to the device which seems to be the DAQpad (maybe there is a yellow question mark) and go to properties -> update driver.

Sometime it happens, that there is an old device-entry which blocks the driver. So check if there are hidden devices (under view). If yes remove them.

I hope this will solve your problem.

With best regards,

Ralf N.

Note: At last you should deletethe the simulated 6221 in MAX.

Here another troubleshooting-tutorial:

The following steps cover most of the common issues with a DAQPad not showing up in MAX:

  1. First make sure the device is being recognized by Windows. Windows should prompt you with a message that says "New Device Found" if a new device is recognized by the system at start up, and then prompt you to install drivers. If Windows isn't recognizing the device see, then MAX won't recognized the device either.
  2. If Windows is not recognizing the device, check to make sure the USB port on the computer isn't bad by trying another USB port. Check to make sure the USB port on the device isn't bad by trying another USB device on the same port of the computer. If it still won't detect the device, try an entirely different computer.
  3. In the case that Windows is recognizing the device but MAX isn't: press F5 to refresh MAX just to make sure it didn't detect it in the meantime. Also make sure you have the most up-to-date version of NI-DAQ by downloading the latest version that supports your device from the Data Acquisition (DAQ) Installation/Configuration Troubleshooter (link listed below).
  4. If you are using a docking station and a laptop, try connecting the device directly to the laptop without using the docking station. There have been reported issues with the USB ports on docking stations by certain vendors not detecting USB devices, this problem is not specific to the DAQPad but rather all USB devices. In this case please contact the vendor of your docking station for a possible workaround. One workaround for certain vendors is a legacy driver for docking stations that reads the port as a USB 1.1 device instead of USB 2.0.

Hello Ralf

Thank you for your help and for the references... it is not always that easy to find the adapted documentation on the NI website Smiley Wink ...

Because of a major bug caused by the USB devices, I decided to retry to update from 8.5 to 8.7.

I have began to check in MAX if my update of Labview was listed. As after the former attempts, it was not the case.

So I decided to migrate to DAQmx 8.8, and, surprise, this time it was working properly !

I think I am going to keep this last version... Even if everything it contains is not that useful, at least it works, that the essential. I guess my version was corrupted, or maybe I did not have a compatible version of MAX.

Best regards

Sharter
