NI-MAX 5: scan for instruments?

Solved!
Go to solution

I'm trying to set up my GPIB-USB-HS adapter using NI-MAX version 5. Where did the "Scan for Instruments" button go? All my other systems are on NI-MAX 4.4.1.

From the NI-488.2 Help

How do I scan for GPIB instruments?

To scan for instruments connected to your GPIB interface, complete the following steps:

  1. Make sure that your instrument is powered on and connected to your GPIB interface.
  2. > Start Measurement & Automation Explorer.
  3. In Measurement & Automation Explorer, expand the Devices and Interfaces directory by clicking on the + next to the folder.
  4. Right-click on your GPIB interface and select Scan for Instruments from the drop-down menu that appears.

Measurement & Automation Explorer displays the connected instruments in the right window pane.

I don't have any GPIB instruments....so I can't confirm this.

This is how you do it in NI-MAX Version 4. The newest version, version 5, does not have this option anywhere that I can find. Hence why I'm asking.

My appologies.  I assumed that since I had version 5 installed, that the help would be relvant to that version.

Under Help in MAX, search for scan and see what comes up. I do not have 5 on the PC I have my GPIB plugged into.

I was still unable to find it, so I just reverted to version 4.7.7 (which has the "Scan for Instruments" button in the normal place) and went from there.

I'm guessing that this got you going, which is a good thing.  But it really doesn't seem like much of a solution to me.

AE's might miss this thread now that a solution is marked.....but if any driving by happen to notice this one, I wouldn't mind know how to do this too.  I'm sure it'll come up at some point.

Yeah, it's very strange that functionality is removed when moving to a newer version of something.

I understand if they wanted to clean the interface up, but there are some very useful tools that I just can't find anymore. I've right-clicked on all the things, went through every menu option, and did searches in the help. All yielded nothing.

Scan for Instruments was such nice, quick tool to see if everything was connected properly.

Hi dthor,

The Scan for Instruments button is in the same place as the previous version for MAX. Double check that you have the GPIB device selected. The directions that Patrick listed still hold true. See the screenshot below.

Interesting. I wish I'd taken a screen shot before uninstalling version 5. Oh well.

I guess it was just a PEBKAC issue. Perhaps the drivers weren't installed correctly? I don't know, I didn't do the initial install for the system. Anyway, thanks for the info Travis Ann N, I'll be sure to look for it next time IT gives me NI-MAX v5 when I request a new test computer.

Thanks!
