NXG 2.0 Installation: Odd error message & What is NI Monarch Conversion Support?

Solved!
Go to solution

Thanks for the update. It looks like this might be a bug in the installation. Can you please provide me with clear steps on how you choose to install the software? And a list of the software you installed? What OS are you using?

I would like to see if I can reproduce what you see on another computer.

Thanks for continuing to follow up.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro x64 (version 1709). The last 2 screenshots in my previous post shows all NI software, according to NIPM. Here's the list according to NI MAX:

NI MAX Software Home.png

LabVIEW 2013 and 2014 were installed long ago. LabVIEW 2017 and NIPM were installed last year (the latter from http://www.ni.com/download/package-manager-1.0/6604/en/ ).

This year, I think I updated NIPM via its built-in "Updates" tab.

A few days after updating NIPM, I opened it and selected "Browse Products" -> "Programming Environments" -> "LabVIEW NXG" -> "2.0" -> "Install". I believe I unchecked everything except "LabVIEW NXG" and "LabVIEW NXG Run-Time Engine". This brought me to the screenshots in the first post: https://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/NXG-2-0-Installation-Odd-error-message-amp-What-is-NI-Monarch/m-p/3... I clicked "Try Again" and then unchecked all "Additional items" (including NI Monarch Conversion Support) to kick off the installation.

My memory is fuzzy now, but I think I had to leave before the download finished, so I closed NIPM and shut down my computer. I ran the installation again the next day (using the same options), and that completed fine.

Let me know if you'd like a copy of my NIPM's logs (you'll need to tell me where to find them).

Thanks for this information, I will see what I can do on my end to try and reproduce the issue.

Hi JKSH,

Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful in seeing the window where you are able to uncheck the installation of NI Monarch Support. When I attempt to install LabVIEW NXG on a Windows 10 computer it never appears in the additional items. Have you been able to see that option again? I am not sure why it has given you that option, but it appears that it choose to install Monarch Support anyways.

Hi Danielle,

Yesterday, I was able to get the same screen on another Windows 10 (64-bit) PC. It previously had LabVIEW 2013 SP1; I took the opportunity to upgrade to LabVIEW 2017 SP1.

Here's what I did, with a full reboot between each step:

  1. Installed NIPM 17.5 from http://www.ni.com/download/package-manager-17.5/7152/en/
  2. Uninstalled all other NI software using NIPM
  3. Installed LabVIEW 2017 SP1 (32-bit) using our Developer Suite media
  4. Installed the latest patches to LabVIEW 2017 SP1 using NI Update Service
  5. Installed NXG 2.0 using NIPM

Here are the 2 screens I saw for selections:

NIPM - NXG Select.PNGNIPM - NXG Additional.PNG

I think the key points are:

  • The "Select" tab has 2 separate screens: (1) "Select products" and (2) "Additional items you may wish to install". When in (1), click "Next" to go to (2). NI Monarch Conversion Support is in (2).
  • There are 4 separate versions of NI Monarch Conversion Support (2014-2017). Each version is only suggested if the corresponding version of LabVIEW Current Gen is already installed.

Hey JKSH,

I have an update on this for you! After running a conversion, you can click on one of the problems and it will flash on the node which has the error. If you disable the Monarch Support, it will remove this flashing capability. You will get the conversion report, but if there are errors you will have to figure out which node is showing the problem. The name Monarch Support or Monarch Conversion Utility is a little vague, so I can see the confusion here. Let me know if you have questions!

Mystery solved, curiosity sated. Now I know that it's a tool worth installing if I want to convert a large project, and that my installation isn't broken.

Thanks for your sleuthing efforts, Danielle!
