Necessity of GPIB-RS232 Converter

No, you could connect the serial instrument to the serial port and the GPIB instrument to the GPIB port!

(If you only had one port, and couldn't add another, that's when the converter might come in useful)

Ok, I didn't have the instrument in front of me before but now I do and I took a good look at the connections. The instrument has two parts and the connections are as follows:

PC >>GPIB>> Part1

PC >>Serial>> Part2

Part1 >>some cables>> Part2

So you're right, I would just connect the GPIB part with GPIB and the serial part with serial. The converter should not be necessary.
