Need App to convert existing legacy virtual channels into DAQmx global channels

Hi,

We have a large set of old VIs written under legacy and many corresponding virtual channels; we're hoping to make the shift into DAQmx as painless as possible.

Does anyone have an app (VI, C+ program, or other) that will convert virtual channels into global channels?  A similar app that would convert legacy VIs into DAQmx VIs would be nice too... but that's probably wishfull thinking.

Thanks for responding,
Ab

Hello Ab,

National Instruments does not provide any such utilities.  It might be possible to create a utility for converting Traditional NI-DAQ Virtual Channels into NI-DAQmx Global Channels.  However, creating a utility to convert Traditional VIs to DAQmx VIs would be extremely difficult as there is no one-to-one relation ship between Traditional and NI-DAQmx VIs.

Thanks Sean,

I was just hoping for an easy way out.  Oh well.

Can you point me to a discussion or other literature that explains why NI made the DAQmx upgrade but sacrificed backwards compatibility?

Thanks,
Ab

Hello Ab,

After looking into this a little more, I discovered that there is a utility for converting Traditional NI-DAQ Configuration to NI-DAQmx Configuration.  This utility converts Traditional Virtual Channels, Scales, Devices, and SCXI Configurations to NI-DAQmx.  You can find this in MAX by selecting Tools >> NI-DAQmx Configuration >> Convert Traditional NI-DAQ (Legacy) Configuration to NI-DAQmx...

I apologize for not seeing this sooner.  Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,
Sean C.

Unfortunately, it appears this feature has now been removed from MAX. Can any of the NI engineers explain this? I have configuration files with up to 120 channels which I now have to manually convert to DAQmx; that utility has saved me hours of work in the past. Our programmer is using DAQmx channel calls in all of his new applications.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark,

You are correct the conversion utility has been removed, this is due in part to the decreasing need for the utility and its removal uncluttered the menus. You can submit a product suggestion for the return of this utility or the development of a standalone application which performs this task.  I apologize for the difficulty in your application, but you are correct you will need to manually convert each channel.
