New "Targets and Devices..." dialog does not open in Project window

Hi I am trying to add an FPGA device in my project, however when I right click on Project, and go to New -> Targets and Devices...It appears as though it is busy (the mouse icon becomes the hourglass) and after while it just goes back to normal and nothing seems to happen. I have an FPGA device installed which is the RIO card PXI-7831R, and the devices seems to be working fine. When opening a project that already contains it as a device, it is displayed fine. Its just the dialog to add new devices and targets does not appear. I have tried Repairing NI Labview 8.0 and NI Labview FPGA Module, but the problem still exists. I would appreciate if anyone has any idea as to why this is happening and how to resolve it. Thanks!

Hi Kewsvnet

Can you confirm that you are using LabVIEW 8.0 with the LabVIEW FPGA 8.0 module. Are you able to see the cRIO in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX). MAX is a low level configuration tool that enables you to view devices connected to your computer and also the software installed. Expand the Remote Systems tree and check whether the cRIO system can be located. It maybe a driver issue that the 'Targets and Devices' category is not locating the cRIO device. Try reinstalling the latest version of the NI-RIO driver.

LATEST NI-RIO Driver download >> http://digital.ni.com/softlib.nsf/websearch/8FBECA88CF87D34F862571C600566283

Although the following articles involves Compact Vision System, it outlines an issue whereby the FPGA device can not be found in LabVIEW. Have a go at the solution and see how you get on.

I am using the LabVIEW 8.0 with the Labview FPGA 8.0 module. The NI-7831R is shown in the NI-RIO Devices in MAX, which is on the local machine, so no
need to check Remote Systems. The drivers seem to be working fine. As it is recognised in MAX and other Labview projects. The problem lies when I try to
add New Devices and Targets, the dialog does notappear at all, if it was just a problem of it not recognising the devices, it would still open the dialog and show No Devices Found in the list, as I checked that on a different machine. So I believe the problem lies somewhere in Labview. Any ideas on what could be the reason, and how to rectifiy it. Thanks

Hi Kewsvnet

So you have tried the device on another machine and it works fine, is it only on a specific machine that this issue is occuring on? I think I misunderstood the issue yesterday, am I right in understanding that when you click on 'New Devices and Targets' absoloutely nothing happens apart from the 'hour-glass' appearing for a while? If this is the case it maybe the case that LabVIEW may have become corrupted in some manner. Repairing it will not solve an issue like this. What you should try is to force LabVIEW to create a new .ini file, which holds all the configuration settings. To do this you need to rename the .ini file so that when LabVIEW starts it will detect no .ini file an create a new one.

The .ini file can be located via C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.0\ LabVIEW Configuration Settings (it is a file size in the range of 2Kb - 10Kb)

You need to rename this file 'LabVIEW Backup', then attempt to restart LabVIEW and a new project and try to add a target.

Let me know how you get on

Hi kewsvnet,

In addition to what YatinM was suggesting, can you tell us on what exact item in the LabVIEW Project you are performing the New>>Targets and Devices... operation?

If the board is attached to your computer, you need to perform the right click>>New>>Targets and Devices on the "My Computer" project item to discover boards that are directly connected to your computer. This is a common mistake, since it is not that intuitive whether you should select the LV Project root item or the My Computer item.

In case that's exactly what you are already doing, I have a few questions for you: What exactly do you see in the Add Targets and Devices dialog? Do you see any folder items in there? What do you see if from the radio buttons you select "New target or device" (3rd option in that dialog)?

Hi JMota,
I response to your questions. I have tried to Add Targets and Devices, using both the LV Project and My Computer as root items. But the same problem occurs in both, the dialog that should follow just does not appear. When I click Targets and Devices, it appears busy for a few seconds, and nothing happens.

That's very strange. I have never seen nor heard of somebody having that problem.

I think I will have to agree with YatinM's coment: "
LabVIEW may have become corrupted in some manner."

Is there anything special about that machine where you are seeing the problem? Have you installed Beta versions of LV 8.0 or NI-RIO there? If you really need to get this working on that machine, I can't think on a better solution than uninstalling all National Instruments software, deleting the Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 8.0 folder, and reinstalling NI software.

If you have any more information about this problem, please post it. Thanks.

I am having a similar issue but with labview 8.6 and the same card.  Please let me know if you were able to resolve it Kewsvnet!

Thanks

Hi Brian,

Its been a while since I had that problem, but if I remember correctly I was forced to do a complete fresh install of Labview and that seemed to sort the problem out. While that is quite a pain to do, I don't think anything else worked for me.
