Make sure to re-save all your program in the new version. A freshly converted, but not yet saved VI will run slower and use more memory.

Would a mass compile on all the users vi's do the same thing?

That is the best way to do it.  LV compiler will go into all subvi's and compile them into the latest.

Yes, just make sure you keep backups of everything in a safe place. 🙂

I read this info-labview message and thought of your problem. New machine, fast-fancy graphics card.   Hmmm. Do you use cursors? Maybe reduce your video card acceleration as suggested. (Maybe you are Jed and already read this Smiley Happy)

Have you tried lowering your video card acceleration?  I don't know why, but that's worked for me in the past...

Subject: 8.2 is SLOOOOOOOOOoooooooowwww...

Curses!  It's Cursors!

I have 7 cursors on my plot (thick, dotted-line style), when I delete them all the app moves faster!  It's not just a matter of redraw though.

Looks like I might have to implement them with additional plots.  Any ideas why this is happening?

Interesting that you brought that up.  We tried using the newer version on an new embedded CPCI box.  This was by far the worst PC I have seen it run on for speed.  Like what this person described, it was painfully slow to the point where we were not going to use it.   Strange that this PC is better (faster newer CPU, more memory, etc.)  than my Dell I described.   We turned off the hardware accelerator and it at least runs as good as my desktop now.

I did get the new 8.5 disks today and am trying them out.  I turned off all those auto wire, auto route, auto snap, etc. features and it seems about as responsive as the previous version.  I looked in the list of bug fixes and they did not talk about the selection box I had mentioned, however I have not seen this problem yet with the new version so maybe it was fixed.

I too have seen that selection box issue, where the dotted box isn't around the area that you "surrounded". I don't see it all the time, but have seen it on customer machines as well as mine.  I guess I haven't run 6.x in so long I don't remember it being that much faster in drawing. As to the different "look and feel" of the developing environment, well I (and many others) whined about that with 7.x (although there is an option to run it in the "traditional look" mode in the options), but particularly with 8.x as they changed it so much and without the "traditional" option. If all I was developing in was the latest it would be a pain, but as I have to maintain older systems as well it is a real annoyance.   Oh well.  I was going to suggest adding memory, as I had a system recently that was very slow that memory helped, but then you listed some of the machines and 2Gb _should_ be enough!

I've had a split career for quite some time now...IT Support/Instrumentation.  Quite honestly I think you've got other problems...  i.e. an older machine or perhaps too much running on a newer machine.  I started using LV in 1995 with version 4 and I currently use 8.2.1.  The machine I'm currently developing on is 2 years old and LV performs quite well.  It's a little slow starting but runs fine after... that ditto Matlab.  I really take a hard look at your machine!

Thanks for posting.  I thought I may be the only one seeing this strange select box problem.  Keeping my fingers X'ed that 8.5 has solved it.

My speed complaint is just doing simple things with the editor.  Like for example if I draw a wire to connect two items, after I select the second item it stalls for a while before making the connection and drawing the line.  If I select a wire and press delete, it stalls for a while before removing the wire.    It's slow enough that it is just not a smooth way to develope anymore.  IMO, the data entry on it should be as fast as what I can move my mouse and click.  This has always been the case with LabView until I started using 8.    I have tried shutting off all of the cute features but it's still slow.

I am not sure what the speed problem is while trying to use it with the LeCroy DSO.  To me, that's a whole different problem and the easy work around is just not to try and run it in this manner.    It is interesting that I use LV 6 at home on a dual 500 MHz Pentium III with only 512K of RAM and its very fast.

Where I work we have upgraded all of our licenses so I don't have to work with different versions.   I plan to stay with version 6 at home because I have yet to see anything in 8 that would justify the upgrade.  I can see the menu change as a major hit to productivity for anyone having to run the older versions.  I am using this thing every day and still can't shake my old habits.    Good luck!
