It kind of sounds like you have a counterfeit chip, and the official Prolific driver that you had got smart enough to detect it as a fake and is trying to alert you.

Oh I 100% knew it was a counterfeit Prolific chip, which is why I wanted to update this thread. I've just never seen it show up as that in the Device Manager before. Usually it gives back Error Code 10 and won't work. If you force it to load up an older version of the driver it works fine. Years ago at another company we bought a literal tub of them for cheap.
