[OT] ideas for detecting cracks in welds?

I sent the wrong link. A good survey can be found at http://www.asnt.org/ndt/primer1.htm. There are also a fair number of on-line articles on various techniques.

(I knew there was an ndt in there somewhere)

You can also check out Moire interferometry and holographic methods, although the Moire ones are more likely to be easy to implement.  I think your best bet is ultrasound or simply hitting it with a hammer, but someone already mentioned those.

Thanks all!

These ideas have been great.

Please do not feel you are too late to add other ideas.

Even if you don't have new suggestions but have thoughts on any of the above, please share.

This is just a comment as I have no experience in this field whatsoever.  Just wanted to say that I'm really liking the idea of hitting something with a hammer to determine if it's 'sound'.

Perhaps I'll try it with a few of my questionably 'sound' co-workers...
