I finally figured out how to do the select-all then deselect just about everything on the front panel except for the mystery objct way off to the left. I placed some line object to the right of the main screen viewing area and got the mystery object to shift into view with the aligh command- it happened to be a waveform indicator. I have no idea how it got relocated halfway across the globe but it's now back in plain view.
