Speaking only for myself, I have not tried to use them this way since I first posted this thread, and I would venture an educated guess that NI R&D have not done much with XControls in a long while. I've been avoiding them, but if they were bulletproof and implemented well I would definitely use them.
As a bit of a tangent, Darren Nattinger has a nice presentation where he opines from years of experience about LabVIEW features that cause disproportionate amounts of headaches. XControls aren't talked about, and I don't agree with all of his opinions, but it's a great watch.
