Can you give us some more infomration? Like what version of LabVIEW are you using, and where or what is the Write Device VI? Also what are the differences you are seeing?

I'm using LV5.1, and the device i'm writing to is a serial port. I don't see a difference. i'm just curious about the pro's/cont's of the "old" and the "newer" vi.

Serial Port Write uses Write Device. The replacement for Serial Port Write is VISA Write. Using VISA Write is a huge advantage when writing drivers for instruments that have both serial and GPIB interfaces since a single driver can handle both interfaces just by changing the resource name. With VISA property nodes, you have a bit more control as well, I believe. NI no longer supports Serial Port Write/Read with serpdrv and it's no longer included with LabVIEW 7.
