Oh wait, I just noticed you didn't need a shift register in your setup.  Maybe that's what was causing the issues with mine.  I'll try it more like this in the application.

Yes.  It will work the same with local variables.

I got rid of them and used the terminals themselves because the terminals were sitting in the loop unused.  If you need the terminals elsewhere, or use the local variables elsewhere, then go ahead.  Just be careful with local variables because if you don't use them appropriately, they can lead to other problems such as race conditions.
