Problem with Runtime Engine

Hi All,

I just want to update this post. Yes, the problem is still alive and well! I recently "upgraded" my XP PC to Windows 8 (now 8.1) because my company was scared about Microsoft no longer providing security updates after April 8, 2014. When I tried to run a VB6 executable (of course I ran the installer for that program to get the exe in the first place), I got the same error message about the LabView 7.1.1 runtime engine (I have LV8.5 installed, not 7.1.1). I never waited the "long time" for the installer dialog to complete after cancelling. Instead I would just kill it with Task Manager. (The process is "Part of Logos (32 bit)", which I guessed correctly is the process that was hanging.) As soon as I killed the process, a message box popped up stating "Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." Then the VB6 executable launched and ran properly.

Creating the (an empty) DataSocket folder did the trick. However on Windows 8 the Documents and Settings folder is not accessible, so this is the path to use is as follows:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\National Instruments\DataSocket

That seems to be an alias for older Windows path, which the malfunctioning installer seems to be able to find.

Hope this helps people as they also migrate to Windows 8 and beyond.

Ed
