Problems wiring connectors in LabVIEW 2011

Solved!
Go to solution

I've just been "bitten again" by a problem wiring a connector for a VI in LabVIEW 2011 (I've not seen this behavior in any earlier version of LabVIEW back to 7.0).

The issue is as follows.  I (or one of my colleagues, who has also observed this), run LabVIEW 2011 (August 2011 release), 32-bit, on Windows 7, 64-bit systems.  I create a VI using the usual 4-2-2-4 connector pattern, and wire the connector appropriately.  I save the VI, then drop it onto a Block Diagram to use.

In one variant of this problem, the dropped VI shows no connectors, or, if used to "replace" an existing wired-in VI with the same connector pattern, "breaks" all of the wires (because it has no connectors when dropped on the Block Diagram).  Re-opening and re-examining the VI shows that the connectors are, indeed, wired, but when I go to use the VI, the connector wiring is absent (the dropped VI shows no connectors).

In the second variant, everything is fine, the connectors show up as expected.  But I then decide to move a connector.  I open the VI to edit it, do a Disconnect this Terminal, and re-wire it to its new location.  The Connector Pane shows the new pattern.  But when I drop the VI on a block diagram, the connector is in its original location.

Restarting LabVIEW, indeed rebooting the PC, changes nothing.  The only way to "fix" this is to Disconnect All Terminals and one-by-one reconnect them.  A nuisance, to say the least, but also a clear bug.

Has anyone else seen this?  I've sent it off to NI, but it would be useful to know "is it just me?" or not.  In my own defense, I've seen this behavior on several different PCs, all Win 7/LabVIEW 2011.  I've also seen this with multiple LabVIEW Projects.

I've attached a file that has such a "buggy" VI.  When you open it, you'll see that the indicator "Length" is wired to the top set of connectors.  When I drop this VI onto a New VI, however, the connector shows coming out the bottom!

Yes. I see exactly the same behaviour. To correct it I will often swap two terminals around and back then really save the VI. Very annoying bug. Terminals are fundimental to labview and present since the beginning so why do they break now on 2011?

Read this thread.  I think it applies to your situation.

I have been informed by an NI engineer that this problem (a) is real and (b) has been fixed in the SP1 (Spring) release of LabVIEW 2011.  I haven't had a chance to check this out, but (trusting soul that I am), I consider this problem to have been a "Bug in LabVIEW 2011 that has been fixed in the SP1 Release", and therefore, I'm prepared to mark this "Solved".
