Another reason from NI side: Support!
LabVIEW 6.x is supported by the forum, LabVIEW 8.5 is supported by the forum, the phone- and emailsupport at NI as well as feedback regarding bugs are CARed and are enqueued for "removal".
If you encounter a bug in LV 6.x which is solved in a later version, upgrade's the (only) way to "remove" it.
