Good carrots Ben, but a follow up question: How does the CLA exam look at a flat file structure with virtual folders? Is this an officially recommended way, or 'just' a smart one?

My guess is that "smart" is OK for the exam. As I mentioned earlier, the structure outside the project explorer shouldn't matter any more than the arrangements of your files in the FAT/bitmap on the hard drive. Windows API shows you the files organized as folders and files, and that should be good enough. In fact, come to think of it, many Windows folders are virtual folders.
I'm guessing that as long as it's well organized in the project, I don't see a problem with very basic folder structure by library, and then by file type (controls, VIs, etc.).

I can not answer that question about the CLA exam. I can attribute the inspiration for how I organize files on disk to something that I read from AQ when speaking of LVOOP. So if following what AQ suggested a negative for the CLA, then the CLA exam needs fixed.
And since I am on the topic..
There used to be standard that VIs should be named with a prefix to indicate how they are grouped. Putting a VI in a library automatically prefixes the VIs with the library name. Double bonus is when we clone the library, the prefixes get updated and the members of the library get relinked the right way. As a dyslexic developer, I really appreciate that feature since my brain starts to scramble letters about 4-5 letters. That prefixing non-sense was like throwing marble in the path of a sprinter.

Pretty sure the official NI recommendation is to not use auto populating folders.

I personally really like this kind of discussions. Especially this kind of deep inside information is really valuable.
This isn't my thread that we're hijacking, but AFAIC, keep it coming!
This is becoming one of the classic flame war topics, but you might actually get somewhere near the point that I might give it try sometime.

Proverbs 27:17 "17Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."
When we are willing to talk honestly and are humble enough to admit there may be a another way, we all become "sharper".

Good one.
It's a hole lot easier to be defensive from the start though. Still a bit puzzling, as it doesn't cost anything to be openminded and inquisitive. Worse that can happen is that you have to (want to) change your mind, which is in fact called personal growth. The text format doesn't help...

It took some effort for me to understand that one!
Now if you want to think about that topic
and
you have some time when nobody else is around
and
you are at lest willing to listen
The you may want listen to this interview.
I only caught about 30 minutes of that video but I did learn something and learning is good.

I don't think it's really hijacking a thread. I believe it is still quite relevant to the original topic. Maybe we are "coercing" the topic in a particular direction. And that's all I will say about "coercion".

Still working on it. The theory is easy

Will do, but it'll have to wait.
