Request for user feedback: Just-In-Time Advice

Sorry - Clippy has scared me for life.  I disabled the JIT Advice after the first display.  I hate Clippy and all imposters!!!

To show the wide contrast in preferences between different people, I think the automatic selection tool is the greatest feature to ever come along, while Jim thinks its the most annoying.  I guess I'm too lazy to press the tab key or to move the mouse and select another tool.  Or maybe I'm just too involved in my programming to want to take an extra step in selecting tools.

Jim West practically stole the words out of my mouth:

>I also disabled the JIT... along with abridged menus, automatic tool selection, automatic wiring, X's on broken wires and basically every other new LV GUI feature.  As a user since 2.2, I am fairly ingrained with the 'old' ways.  I found the automatic tool selection to be the most annoying.

A few more additional comments:
The ideas for improved control for JIT would really help.  Canceling for this session, canceling always buttons right on the pop-up dialog.  Another idea would be to allow for more customization during installation.  I think it would be useful to have a selection on installation that would allow the user to choose from one of several interfaces.  The default, for new users mainly, would have JIT turned on, as well as auto-tools and a lot of the other "new" features.  There could be "LV6" and "LV7" options, which would turn a lot of those features off so that it comes up looking more like it did in those previous versions.  Another thing I always turn off is the Express pallette.  I much prefer the old advanced pallette.  One of these older interface options would automatically choose that for me.
There are other options I always try to remember to change when I do a new install.  Things like coercion dots being RED instead of greyWhat I would really like is some way to import my settings from one installation (same or a previous version) to a new installation.  But a handful of installation options could conceivably take care of most of those issues.

Regards,
   Dave

I agree with Jim West that the auto tools is the most annoying feature for me as a long-time user (since version 3), but I disable the JIT advice right after the auto tool selection and express palette.  Since I work on so many different installations this is becomming second nature to me now, and I have not even read a JIT since the first one popped up.
I do think that it would be a good idea to add a JIT button as suggested to the tool bar.   That could accumulate the messages and be invoked at leisure (not when I'm concentrating on a piece of code).   For me nothing is worse than a pop-up interruption right when I'm "in the flow" of programming.  They are just as annoying as the MS clippy.
Perhaps the upgrade notes could include a separate section with more advanced information as well.  They are definitely a little too basic.

The installer does not overwrite any existing labview.ini file.  Nor does uninstalling remove this file. So if you re-install, your configuration is preserved. And when you upgrade, all you need to do is copy your .ini file from the previous version into the new version.

I'd add my vote for some option that indicates that there was some just-in-time advice available without putting pop-up windows. Currently I turn it off (normally just after it displays the first bit of untimely advice !) because the annoyance of the pop-up generally outweighs the benefit of the advice - it would have to be pretty impressive advice to overcome my dislike of extraneous pop up windows. Something like how Firefox indicates that there are updates available (small icon in the menu bar) would work well for me.

I also vote to eliminate them - maybe a question when you are installing labview (Advanced user click here)

I also vote to get rid of the wizards. And stop adding 'features' to MAX - it is now dog slow.

Wanted - Labview multi monitor aware. I run three monitors (soon to be seven) and labview wants to open a new VI across 80% of the screen.

The "further details about JIT design" that I promised originally are now available here.

Hi Stephen.

I do not used the JIT advice either. I disabled it right after the initial installation.
I agree with other that mentioned that a check mark in the window "do not show JIT again" would be usefull.

Regarding tha comment:"Wanted - Labview multi monitor aware. I run three monitors (soon to be seven) and labview wants to open a new VI across 80% of the screen.".

I found it also quite annoying that labview default windows size is proportional to your resolution. This should be a configuration setting.
