Rough Waveform

Hey all,

I have an XY graph that represents the data from an array that is created from 8 clusters.  The waveform I have is pretty choppy and not as smooth as I would like it to be.  The multitude of options for waveform conditioning, monitoring, generation, measurements, and conversions left me puzzled on which option to choose.  What is the best way to go about creating a smooth waveform from a rough, scattered one?

Thanks,

Steve,

The answer is... It depends. The variety of options exist because different kinds of "roughness" respond better to different processing.

Please try to be specific about the nature of both the signal and the "roughness." Is it random noise, periodic interference, large spikes, transistions between segments of data (such as from gain switching or non-contiguous sample sets), outliers, drift, or something else? Do you know what the signal should be and do you know what causes the roughness?

Many participants on this Forum may be able to help once you provide some details. Pictures or sample datasets are helpful, too.

Hey Lynn,

This is an image of my graph.  The points aren't scattered or random, simply in a in linear fashion rather than waveform fashion.  In some way I need to smooth it all out.

Here is the data input to the graph, perhaps this can help..

From the information you said you needed I think this will suffice.

Thanks for any help you can provide Lynn Smiley Very Happy

Steve,

First, please clean up the diagram. The overlapping wires make it very difficult to tell what is connected to what.

You are only connecting 5 points to each graph. You cannot expect to get a very smooth curve with only five points. It also appears that the X-axis spacing is not uniform.

What do you think the data should look like? Can you post the numerical values for at least one of the graphs?

hi Steve

a general query using 'graph smooothing ' on discussion forum search revealed two useful threads:

Hey Lynn and Seadog,

I know that the diagram and wiring suck...it's not my VI (you should see what goes into each of those arrays, about 1000 wires, not even joking).  I just thought a quick look at that would shed some light to the problem and it appears it did...I'll be sure to take a look at Mike Porter and Altenbach's help.

Thanks to the both of you!
