Runtime Error: abnormal shutdown of c:\program files\...\labview.exe

Okay.  I've just upgraded to labview 8.0 last week and have been using it without error until the program hung when I opened it one day.  To remedy the situation and after waiting a while, I "ctrl+alt+del"ed it and forcebly closed the application.  From then on, the main lab view program will not function.  I get a runtime error saying that the program (c:\program files\...\labview.exe) was shutdown adnormally and to consult with the software manufacturer. Other NI applications function without error (ie: Measurement and Automation Explorer, Previous versions of labview, etc).

I tried to reinstall the upgrade to no avail.  Leason learned:  ctrl+alt+del is evil.  If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate any input and I will relay the results.  Thanks in advance.

Okay, here's the exact dialogue:

Runtime Error!

Program: ...ogram Files\National Instruments\Labview 8.0 \Labview.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

From other forums, I have gotten advice to try to run "regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msi.dll".
This method allows the splash screen to at least appear momentarily, but the runtime error still
persists.

Hi Wiztrek,

This does indeed sound like an odd error/situation. We'll do our best to get it sorted out for you though! A few questions for you:

1. What kind of computer is this? Laptop, server, desktop, etc?
2. What OS? Service Pack (if applicable)?
3. When does it happen? You mentioned the splash screen -- is that as far as it gets?

Something you could try (and this is a shot in the dark) is to rename or delete the LabVIEW.ini file (it's in the same directory as LabVIEW.exe). If that doesn't work, I think a reinstall is best to try to fix it. Remove LabVIEW 8.0 from your computer via Add/Remove Programs. Then completely delete the "LabVIEW 8.0" folder from "Program Files/National Instruments" on your harddrive.

When you run the installer again (after rebooting of course), make note of any errors you receive (if any). Try following the steps outlined in this KnowledgeBase -- we might get something useful out of the install log:

How Do I Generate an Error Log File for a Software Installation?

I hope this helps shed some light on the issue - let us know what you find out!

Thank you so much for the response, Charlie.  Here's some more info:

*The computer is a desktop computer with Windows XP SP2

*When I open Labview 8.0, the application appears on the taskbar.  Nothing appears except for the the Visual C++ Runtime Error.  If I run the msi.dll, I can see a splash screen before the error comes up.

*Renaming the labview.ini file yielded no progress.

*In the Add/Remove Programs Window, only Labview v5.1 is available to remove.  No other versions appear.  Without uninstalling version 8 because it doesn't show up, reinstallation also yields no progress.

UPDATE:  We do have v8.2.  However, I do not have enough liscenses to install the full version on this particular machine.  When I put the evaluation on, Labview v8.2 came up without error, but also does not appear on the uninstallation screen in Add/Remove Programs.

My next step will be to delete the folder manually and to generate an error log file for you to examine when I reinstall.

~Thanks again and let me know if you need anything else!

The add/remove programs for LabVIEW software is quite a bit different than the 5.1 you had before. There should be a listing called 'National Instruments Software'. Select that and click the 'Change' button. The various version s of LabVIEW (8.0 and 8.2) should be then get listed.

Roger that, I am currently trying to repair the installation.  If that doesn't work, I will simply uninstall it and reinstall it.  I can't imagine that this won't work.  I will let you know regardless.  Thanks

I use labview 8.2 and also suddenly encounter very similar question.
I've attached my error scrren shot below.

Hi Ryan,

Unfortunately, we have not been able to find a cause of this error. If you remember as to what caused this problem and can retrace the steps, please be sure to let us know. Reinstalling LabVIEW would be the best option right now.
