A separate conductor should be used to tie the grounds of the two systems together if necessary, it should NOT be the shield. The shield should be tied to ground, but only at one end. If it is tied to both ends, then rather than shielding the twisted pair, it becomes a path for a noisy ground plane to induce noise on the communication wires it is enclosing.
