Solved!

Omar II. That program still hangs up at the read function and has the timeout error

But did you get anything back?

I go back to my first question.

Have you gotten it to work with some type of terminal program like hyperterminal or TeraTerm?

Are you sure your cable is correct? Do you need a null modem?

i ddi not get anything back no, just the same error. as far as i can tell from reading the manual it should be a straight plug n read serial device like i have used in the past with other labview programs. I dont know why this is causing such difficulty.  When i try to run the hyperterminal on my computer i get this error:  windows has reported a TAPI error.

I think you problem is outside of LabVIEW or Hyper Terminal. If Hyper Terminal does not work I do not think LabVIEW will work.

Check the comm port in Device Manager.

Check the comm port in MAX.

Open a VISA Test Panel in MAX see if that works.

Find something else to try to talk to, to make sure your cable and comm port are working.

How do i tell that? I am using a serial cable connected directly to the serial port on the computer.

maybe i can try and find a serial device by tomorrow. i  was surprised that the detector used it instead of usb to be honest. but i sent the company an email asking for help as well. hopefully they get back to me and i can get back to all of you.
