SourceSafe 2005

Does LV 8.0 correctly function with MS SourceSafe 2005 or is support limited to SourceSafe 6.0? I tried to search all the online documentation but there was no reference to any particular software version.

Since nobody answered here, I contacted NI technical support to find out which versions of Microsoft SourceSafe are supported. The answer was that LV has an interface to SourceSafe but there is no guarantee that any particular version of SourceSafe functions. NI doesn't guaratee that any third party software functions with Labview.

NI has strongly promoted the source code control capabilities of Labview 8, but it seems that NI can't tell if these capabilities really work. It is very weird to me indeed. As if I bought a Labview for Windows but NI couldn't tell if Windows in this context means Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or Windows XP.

Does anybody have any experience if LV functions correctly with MS SourceSafe 2005? If not what about MS SourceSafe 6.0?

The specifications for LabVIEW 8.0 state that only Windows 2000 and XP are supported.

During development, the versions at the time of third-party providers were tested with LabVIEW's source control integration. SourceSafe 6.0 was the released version so that is what was used.  SourceSafe 2005 was not released at the time but a cursory test of it with LabVIEW showed that it worked fine (2005 seems to be a polished version of 6.0 with some new functionality, but essentially the same core).

Regarding support of third-party source control providers.  The LabVIEW interface is as generic as possible to accommodate as many providers are possible. Since there is no way through LabVIEW to enforce functionality, some providers may have behavior that is not expected and could cause problems.  This is even true between version releases of a provider.  That is why while the integration should work as advertised, complete functionality cannot be guaranteed.

Hello Toni M,

You should be able to use SourceSafe 2005 successfully with LabVIEW 8.0.

These tools are based on the same SCC interface. Any SCC that works with MS Visual Studio should work with LabVIEW. National Instruments cannot guarantee 100% compatibility with 3rd party software when the version changes. However, I don't see a reason for incompatibility even if LabVIEW 8.0 isn't tested with MS Visual SourceSafe 2005.
