Summer of LabVIEW - SquareBattle Competition

Howdy y'all! the G Idea Exchange and I have teamed up to run this year's Summer of LabVIEW series of programming challenges, the first of which is a SquareBattle competition with a submission deadline of July 1st.

For a short intro (< 4 minutes) check out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6kcpe6oSuQ

In short, the challenge is to implement logic for squares in a grid that can move, replicate, and attack to try and dominate the battlefield against other teams. This was originally implemented by Endigit for NI Week competitions many years ago but this new VIPM package is rewritten to try and make it more approachable to more skill levels of LabVIEW development. Additionally, NI is offering 10 recertification points for submitting entries to the SquareBattle competition. The final tournament recap is planned to take place at GDevCon NA or as an online event depending on schedule and slot availability.

A more in-depth introduction (~32 minutes) to implementing behaviors for squares can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_T_jAQ0_dw

And for the last YouTube link of this post, here are some of the highlights from DNatt and I running a SquareBattle competition internally in NI last Summer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ey07pnZ0Jw4

You can join the Summer of LabVIEW Discord server at https://discord.gg/KxtUER4NGS to chat about the challenges (there'll be more after SquareBattle and more next year!).

There will be a website for uploading submissions to, but that's still in work and I'll be posting again once that's available. If the intro video caught your interest then joining the Discord server will be the best way to stay up to date with announcements like when the submission website is ready and when the next challenges are beginning. Feel free to reach out as well if you'd like info and suggestions on running a competition within your own user groups, companies, etc. The engine has built in video recording capabilities if you have FFMpeg available on your system (It runs slowly once a lot of squares are active at once and replaying recorded matches is highly recommended!)
