Super noob Robot Simulator question

OK, I got the simulator up and running, but it can't get autonomous mode to work.  I tried to stick to the default code examples, so as to avoid mistakes on my part.  It would be a great help if someone could help me with steps to get the autonomous mode to run with the sample FRC 2016 code.  Then I could probably better understand what is going on in the program.

 

Simply switching on autonomous mode in the robot driver doesn't seem to work (I can drive the virtual robot in remote mode however, so I am on the right track).  I even tried selecting the demo autonomous code from the pull down in  the Autonomous .vi and saving it but that does nothing.  Actually it seems to cause error sometimes.  Also just switching to autonomous mode is the default program starts the robot driver complaining that I am starving other processes.

 

I fee like I am just on the edge of understanding what is going on.
