Support for Version of Labview

As NI comes out with the different version of LabVIEW, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, etc, is there any specific length of  that they will continue to support the older versions?  For example, is there a set time limit that NI will continue to support LabVIEW 6.1?

Hello Jim,

as far as I know, the support goes back to one version. That means after the realease of LV8.0 the support goes back till the LV7.x versions. But normally you get support for all questions you asked here in the forum or by the NI Support.
It will be only critical by questions which go back to LV3 ,4, 5 because there are only a few people which work still with this versions. And another point is, that this versions often run on older operating systems the most people not longer use.

But, if there is a question regarding the older versions, post them, many of us, while not having the older versions currently working, can probably still help. In a discussion with one of the higher ups at NI (at NIWeek) this very issue was brought up, particularly as there are many government contracts where there is an expectation of _long_ term support., so National Instruments is looking at this issue. Mind you, don't call Microsoft for support of Windows 3.1, so NI's consideration isn't necessarily the industry norm.

I have every version of LabVIEW for Windows since 2.5.2, so I could revive one of my old "legacy" machines if there was a desperate need.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for inquiring about National Instruments software support.  We at National Instruments are proud to support the 3 most current releases of our software products (x.1 releases ARE considered major releases, but x.y.1 releases are not).  So, as of now we currently support LabVIEW 8.0, 7.1, and 7.0.  Some of the questions for the older versions might be answered by NI, but this is often the exception not the rule.  The LabVIEW community on the discussion forums is a great resource for questions, and if we at NI are able to answer your questions for the non supported versions we will often give it a shot.

Hopefully this answers your question.  If you have any other questions please let us know!
