The reason I am using the booleans is that there is going to be a custom front panel with a specific graphic design and the tabs are going to be hidden.

As was mentioned above, the idle state is the only state in the case structure.

I have been trying to separate the CAN data aquisition and the front panel updates into two separate loops with a queue to transmit data, and it seems to have resulted in some improvement.

If you are using a queue you won't have to put in a wait (ms).vi because the queue will cause the loop to wait until it receives data.  However, if you are constantly streaming data, you still may want to use the wait (ms).vi
