Trying to "find examples" in newly installed LabVIEW8 results in an Error 2

Hi all, and Happy New Year,
I recently installed LabVIEW8 on my machine, an until yesterday hadn't really opened it up to try anything.  I tried to look at the examples and got the following error message:

Error 2 occurred at System Exec.vi. Command was ""C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\example finder\1.0\bin\NIExampleFinder" -- labview 8.0 license,LabVIEWPro "

I've installed this on my P4 laptop with 512M RAM and a lot of available HD (50Gb+). I'm running WinXP(home) with SP2, and haven't run into any problems with the previous versions (well none that weren't expected 😉  ). I also notice that when I go to the "Add/remove" programs in control panel, none of the versions of LabVIEW on the machine show up (LV6.1, 7.1.1 and now 8.0), nor do I see any "uninstall" icons under their respective folders in "Start". I figured that since I had originally had LV8beta on here last spring/summer that I would make sure and uninstall it (if still on) and the newly installed 8.0 and start over, but don't see where to do it.

Thanks, as always

Putnam,

There should be a single entriy in the "add/remove programs" control panel labeleld National Instruments Software. Select it and click on "Change". You should then see all installed versions.

You must uninstall all beta versions before installing the public version. Your error is probably caused by overinstalling 8.0 over a beta version. Also make sure that the various programs are not blocked by the XP SP2 firewall.

Thanks Christian and Happy New Year!
I uninstalled my latest LV8 attempt through "add/remove" programs, didn't see any signs of LV8beta. I reinstalled it (LV8) and I still have no example access (well I can go to the example directory and open them), no Example finder. I then opened LV7.1.1 and now when I try to get examples there I get something flashing on the screen (small, size of an error message box) that opens and closes too quickly to actually read. I had examples after I installed the LV8beta, it has only been since I installed the current LV8 that I've had these problems. Still trying to figure it out, but have to concentrate today on finishing a project at a customer.   It seems to point at some incompatibility of the examples bin file, or a corrupted one, so maybe if I delete it manually before installing LV8, or delete it and reinstall 7.1.1. (wouldn't want 8 to install one that it could only use)

Hiya Putnam,

This is an interesting problem.  I think it's a good idea to uninstall 7.1 as well and reinstall both versions.  It is probably due to installing over the beta version but I'm sure we can get it worked out.  If all else fails, there are some utilities we can use to remove all the NI software from your machine and start fresh.. but it sounds like you may have a lot of software so let's see if something else will work first 🙂

Please let us know how it goes!

Putnam,

Try the following:

go to C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Shared\ProductCache\lv80rte and run the 8.0 runtime installer.

Hi all,
Well I decided to go the uninstall everything and reinstall and now remember why I didn't want to. I guess it will result in a clean install of most of my "stuff" but it has been very time consuming and I have run into a problem. When I try to install the state machine diagram toolkit it won't because it says I don't have LabVIEW 7.0 or later installed, even though I now have a fresh install of 7.1, with the excruciating 7.1.1 "patch" installed (why didn't the quarterly update CD's include that?). I saw only a passing comment from Ben in an unrelated discussion of the state machine toolkit, that hinted that he also has seen this. I don't want to dig out my 7.0 disks and redo everything, so if there is a "trick" I'd love to hear it!

Thanx!

Hi P.M.,

I am facing the same problem when installing LV 8.5 after uninstalling LV 8.2 totally. Although I know that one year has passed since your posting it seems to be a similar problem than yours: How did you solve your problem? Is there a registry-hack or something similar? Uninstalling and installing again is a matter of a whole working-day so I try to avoid it.

Or isn`t there anyone else out there facing the same problem?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I sorry, but after nearly two years I don't recall doing anything in particular other than a remove and reinstall of 7.x and then 8.

Do you run any kind of personal firewall or other security software? Make sure that the various LabVIEW services are allowed to use the network:

Thank you both for your fast response. I have deactivated the firewall (also during installation) and deactivated all virus scanning software. I visited the mentioned links before but found that they are not relevant for my case, because I do not get a security alert or something else. I just get the error message cited above and am not able to start the "Find examples".
