Unable to Install Instrument I/O Assistant

I recently purchased the Student Edition of LabVIEW 7.1.1 and am trying to get the I/O Assistant up and running so I can do serial communication as I was able to with the 7.0 Evaluation. Since no Device Drivers CD came with the package, I followed the instructions in the Read Me First flyer to go to ni.com/info and enter the info code "drivers" to download the latest drivers. The link that I came up with is as follows:
http://digital.ni.com/softlib.nsf/websearch/f3ca0298c715bcd886256e82005758e5

Unfortunately though, the "Instrument I/O Assistant Version 1.0.1 for Windows 2000/NT/XP" download gave me the following error message when I attempted to open the VI I had already created using the 7.0 Eval: "Your installation of Instrument I/O Assistant is incomplete because you must install LabVIEW 7.0 before installing Instrument I/O Assistant. To complete your installation, use the LabVIEW Driver CD to re-install the Instrument I/O Assistant."

This message doesn't make any sense, because I first uninstalled LabVIEW 7.0 then installed LabVIEW 7.1.1 -- all before installing the Instrument I/O Assistant Version 1.0.1! Also, it seems odd that the error message referenced 7.0 instead of 7.1.1, so I did some searching and ran across this lone reference to Instrument Assistant Version 1.0.2:
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/5C4F70EE4CFD7EF086256E74004F2D50

I'm guessing that what I really need is the Instrument I/O Assistant Version 1.0.2, since I'm assuming 1.0.1 is for some reason not compatible with LabVIEW 7.1.1 -- but is this correct? And if so, where and how do I get it?

Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated...

Instrument I/O Assistant 1.0.1 IS compatible with LabVIEW 7.1. The issue is really an installation problem - the Assistant installs LabVIEW support files under the LabVIEW directory. The I/O Assistant 1.0.1 was released before LabVIEW 7.1 released, so that the I/O Assistant cannot install LabVIEW 7.1 support files, it can only install LabVIEW 7.0 support files. Now, the LabVIEW 7.0 support files installed by the I/O Assistant 1.0.1 are compatible with LabVIEW 7.1 - they just need to be manually copied to the LabVIEW 7.1 directory.

I've included a zip file with the 4 LV support files necessary for IIOA 1.0.1 to run in LabVIEW 7.1. Create a directory under your LabVIEW 7.1 directory structure:

\LabVIEW 7.1\vi.lib\instrIOAsst

and unzip the contents of the archive into that new directory. Then you should be good to go. Let me know if you have any other problems.

What version of LabVIEW are you using?  Do you have a Device Driver CD that you are using to install Instrument I/O Assistant?  Or are you using the Instrument I/O Assistant web-download installer?

Actually, the Instrument I/O Assistant "driver" is installed off of the driver CD, not from LabVIEW 7.1.  There is a place in the LabVIEW function palette that holds the Instrument I/O Assistant, and this is installed by LabVIEW - I believe this is what you are seeing.  But the actual driver needs to be installed from the Driver CD.  Do you have your Driver CD that came with LabVIEW 7.1?

I am having problems as well..I tried what you had suggested earlier in this post but still no luck. Does it matter if I install the assistant from the disk or the net? I have Labview 7.1.

Thanks,

Mike
