If you saved the VI without a block diagram, I believe this could happen. If that is indeed the case, you'll need to replace the VI with your latest backup, since there's no way to retrieve the diagram once you've saved a VI without a block diagram.
Also, make sure you're not trying to look at the diagram of a Control or Global VI... 🙂

Maybe this will help someone.
I had my computer idle for a while, and when I resumed work. I noticed a dialog box offering to restore crashed items. I dismissed it because I save my work frequently. Then, I noticed one of the vi I had been working on was locked -- the Protection status was locked (no password) and greyed out. I went and found the autosaved item that LabVIEW created in folder: LVAutoSave/archives, which was good with the block diagram available to open. wheew...
