Use cFP IO like remote IO for cRIO

I'm considering an idea that I want to check the feasibility of before I dig too deep into it. We have a couple of generations of test machines here. The first generation runs off of a cFP-2220 connected to a cFP-2120 for IO expansion and the 2nd generation uses a cRIO-9036 to run them. Ideally, I would like to have them all running off of the cRIO-9036 so we only have to work on one code branch and one labview version. cFP code is LV2010 and cRIO is LV2020. Plus, the linux OS on the cRIO opens them up to being much more versatile for us. To minimize the retrofit work, especially for testing out on the trial system, I would like to see if it is possible to network a cRIO to the cFPs and use them like remote IO for the cRIO.

  1. Is this possible?
  2. Is this reasonable or would it require too much effort?
  3. Would latency over ethernet be a concern? I don't think we have any high speed digital IO and the other signals are analog.
  4. Would the cFP still have to have some kind of pass through VI running or could the cRIO access the IO natively?
  5. Anything I'm missing or causes for concern? I'm only about 5 months into the NI Real-Time world plus only a semester in college years ago dealing with labview so go easy on me.
