We are developing a portable instrument for analytical measurements and would like to use LabVIEW and NI hardware for interfacing with the device and handling user interface and control functions. The problem is that the device should be portable and should NOT include a computer. We are considering using minimal tablet-like hardware, possibly running a flavor of the Android OS. Ideally, we'd like to have a touch-screen interface. However, as far as I know, there is no off-the-shelf solution by NI that would support direct control of an instrument from an Android device.
Could anyone recommend a reasonable way for us to proceed? Once again, we are looking for a portable solution without the computer involved. Would we need some custom hardware/software? We'd much rather work with NI solutions, but would like to know in advance whether it's possible for our project.
If you could provide suggestions and/or references to relevant third-party sources, I would very much appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
Sasha

Have you talked to your local N.I. rep?

NI hasn't currently an offering in its product line that would fit your requirements. Data Dashboard is not an option since this is basically just the user interface to shared variables, which need to be deployed somewhere on the network on a NI supported computer platform. That can be Windows, or one of the NI realtime targets but are in fact all computers that you need to place somewhere on the network to provide the shared variables.
