Viewing and controlling VIs via a browser

SHOWING FRONT PANEL AND CONTROLLING VIs FROM A BROWSER

It is possible, without the Internet Toolkit, to remotely see the front
panel of any VI as well as control it from a web browser over the
internet or intranet.

The front panel of a VI can be converted to a .png format, saved to the
drive, and that file read out and presented to any browser that has
connected to the server. Control of that VI can also be attained, just
as if you were sitting in front of the computer itself. Security
measures can be used to limit who can view and control VIs, etc.

How is this done? You can get all the VIs directly from NI's website.
You will need:
-Windows 95/98/NT
-LabVIEW 5.0 or higher
-ImageUpdater VI and ActionImageUpda
ter VIs from NI's website (look
under LabVIEW downloads)

A web server (Microsoft Peer Server) is used on the host machine. When
a browser accesses this server, a java applet (included) is run. This
will connect to both servers on the host machine (image updater server
and action server). The updater server feeds the .png format of the
front panel (the front panel can change to a different VI, and the
browser will change, too) to the browser. The action server reads the
mouse position from the browser, and if keyboard keys are used or the
mouse is clicked, these functions are then performed on the host
machine, allowing the remote user to enter information, toggle buttons,
move graphs, etc.

If you would like more information on how to remotely show and control
your VIs, email me at mark.wysong@ae.ge.com, and I'd be happy to share
this with you.
