What does "Failed to connect to Real-Time Target" mean?

What does "Failed to connect to Real-Time Target" mean?  I get this message when I try to run a VI on a cRIO.  The Measurement & Automation:    System Status: Connect-Running.  Only the Power LED in on in cRIO.  I am testing the use of FIFO function in the cRIO.  Thank you.

Failed to connect to Real-Time Target indicates that LabVIEW can't talk to your cRIO chassis. When you look at the "project" view, there should be a item with and IP address, i.e. 10.21.4.3 that corresponds to the IP of the cRIO chassis, and the little "LED" next to it should be lit, if it is connected. The attached shows one that isn't.

If it isn't, try right clicking on the little computer icon and selecting "connect"

Hi,

Within a labview project window, if you right click on the target and navigate to utilities>>reboot this should also solve the problem. If the Real Time target is in use by someone else this will also create problems.

I know this thread is very old, but I am going to add something to it to help others who might stumble on this - verify that your chassis is not in Safe Mode also (go to the target and look under the tab Controller Settings).  If the controller is in safe mode, it will show up in max as Connected but you will not be able to connect it in LV.

Old topic, but I'm at right now. NI's take on the matter is rather complete: https://knowledge.ni.com/KnowledgeArticleDetails?id=kA00Z0000019SX0SAM&l=de-DE

The solution for me wasn't listed, though. I lost access to a target because the host got messed up. Restarting windows solved it (LabVIEW 2020).

----------
Although I've been 10+ years long fan of LabVIEW, I started to discourage engineers to start new projects in a SaaS language. NI must first regain trust within its community.
