The first step is a risk analysis as this will define the required functions and protections. This will need to be performed by a 'competent person'. If you aren't a 'competent person' then you can (should) hire one in.
The result will be a series of actions that will need to be undertaken to make the system 'safe'. These actions will also be affected by the regulatory domain the equipment is to be used in (locally and at final destination).
e.g.
If the abort function is a safety feature then you will need to adhere to the regulations in force for the locale/s that the equipment is to be used in as well as you own locale.
For emergency stop systems such as stopping a motor, this normally involves some form of physical (read not LabVIEW and software) stop system. Even the type of emergency stop button is also often defined (not just the color but also the complete profile / form) as is the type of electrical circuit and or mechanical systems (see mining for example).
Taking an A.C. electrical motor for example, there could be an emergency stop button (using two seperate circuits, with a safety approved relay and power supply). This will then be used to inject DC into the motor to bring the motor to a 'dead stop' within a specified rotation or time. It may require also that power is applied to dis-engage a brake to enable operation, such that on power failure, the system stopped / inoperable and or safe.
Something as simple as a safety guard must meet regulatory approval requirements. Failure to do so could leave the individuals concerned open to prosecution.
For Europe for example the regulatory domain would be CE which is normally stricter than most other regulatory domains. Although other regulatory domains often impose some other or additional requirement which might for example take into account specific local circumstances. For CE a certificate of conformity will be required signed by the chief engineer (a person with chartered status or clearly equivalent expertise/ experience / qualifications).
In some regulatory domains even this note could now be construed as you having been informed or taken advice.
I suggest you burn it immediately! 🙂
