Why can't I adjust the level on microphone input to sound VIs in Win XP?

I am trying to use sound card microphone input on a notebook PC using LV 6.1 and the Sound VI examples. I find that even though the microphone levels are fine for the MS speech recognition applications, I cannot increase the level enough to record a .wav file in LV. The results I get are very low level and, of course, distroteted by quantizing noise. How can I fix this?

I haven't used these VIs as much, but I know that they are very general purpose VIs and not intended for too much use. You could always record in something else and then read the saved file through LabVIEW if this doesn't work.

I understand why the examples were created and I am only interested in them as a way to learn how to build record and playback VIs using the PC sound card. I am interested in any detailed information on how to do that so if you have any pointers, I would appreciate learning about them.
