Why does VLM v2.0 close after disconnecting a computer

Sam -

I reran the installer and it after it loaded, it seemed to install very fast.  Maybe that was normal but it seemed very fast.  Anyway, afterwards, I ran VLM and tried to disconnect a license and I had the same results.  It abruptly closed.  Any other suggestions?  Something to report back to R&D would be to include a specific verison number or release # in the Help / About windows of the VLM.  It just says v2.0.  Even a date would be nice.

BTW - If this helps, I'm installing this via a RDP (Remote Desktop) session.

Please help... Thanks,

Rob Sevick

Hey Rob,

So you have found a bug.  We really appreciate the patience and the feedback.  Our R&D team has been notified and is already working on a patch.  We will notify you when that is ready.  Sorry for any inconvenience.  It should be soon that we have the patch released.

We have an update for you Rob!!! You can find it here. It will just install over your current version. Hope this helps. I have tested it and it works.

Sam - Are you sure this update is different then the one I already have?  The size is identical to the updated one I already have.  If you recall, I installed VLM 2.0 originally but had problems with the Create Network Installer.  So, I found this same link (via this forum) and downloaded and installed the updated VLM 2.0.  This link you just provided, looks identical.  I downloaded it and compared this to the one I already have and as I mentioned it's identical in size.

Can you confirm this new one is the fixed one for this specific problem, "creating a disconnected computer license"?

Thanks,
Rob Sevick

Hey Rob,

Here's how we can verify it.  After I installed this update I have version: 2.0.0.74.  Check and see what version you currently have installed.  You can do this by going to this folder: C:\Program Files\National Instruments\Volume License Manager.  Then look for the file named: nivlm.exe.  Right click and go to properties.  When you have the properties open there is a tab that says version.  Click on that and then look and see what version you have.  If it is lower than 2.0.0.74 then you need to update from that website.

That is weird.  I checked the version and you're right.  I have 2.0.0.73.  I'll install this version and let you know.  It's just strange it's the same exact size as the previous one.  I'll let you know.

Thanks, Rob Sevick

Sam - it appears to work.  I was able to disconnect the license and the VLM did not crash.  Was this the only fix in the latest release?  One request, would be include the exact version number and date in the VLM under Help / About.  Right now, it just indicates version 2.0.

In addition, can you point me to a hosted web-cast and/or good documention on the new VLM and the licensing changes in this version (user / computer licenses, etc)?  I am a bit confused about how these work in the new VLM and our license.  A web-x or other web-cast from Melissa or ?? would be preferred.

Thanks for your help in getting this update out to me so fast.  I'm thinking I couldn't have been the only one with this problem, right?

Hey Rob,

I believe this was the only fix.

I don't know why they just show the major release version when you go to Help>>About.  We do have a product suggestion page on our website and they do take customers suggestions seriously.

The main VLM page is the best source of documentation for VLM.  You can also suggest a web-cast at the product suggestion page .  You are always welcome to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have with VLM or any National Instruments products for that matter.  You can also use our website to do searches for VLM information.

You are correct in assuming you are not the only one that had this problem.  But thanks to you we got the ball rolling.  I created this Knowledge Base and the one linked to it.
