Why isn't Ni-MAX installed anymore when installing NI-VISA, NI-488.2, or LabVIEW runtimes?

Honestly I want to know why NI-Max is no longer installed when installing any of these.

  1. NI-VISA Runtime
  2. NI-488.2 Runtime
  3. LabVIEW runtime

I have been using LabVIEW since LabVIEW 5.1 and NI-MAX was ALWAYS installed with one of the listed runtimes. I have relied on being there for well over a decade.

Why is it no longer installed by default and how can I install it now?

I don't know were NI is getting all their new ideas but it certainly can't be from anyone that has any experience using LabVIEW

I think it's listed in NIPM if you care to dig through that monstrosity.

OMFG! This is the absolute worst decision NI has made (maybe even worse than NIPM)

NI-MAX and it's associated tools like

  1. NI-I/O trace
  2. NI 488.2 Interactive control
  3. VISA Interactive Control

Are valuable troubleshooting tools that I, someone who has been using LabVIEW for a good 20 years now has come to rely on being there.

NONE OF THESE SHOULD BE OPTIONAL!

There are plenty of other ways to reduce the installer package. For instance why are we REQUIERD to install several levels of PXI support on every computer we deploy a LabVIEW executable to when we do not have one single PXI device in our company?

So thanks to NI's short sidedness here is what I will have to do from now on...

  1. Build my installer and not bother to include any additional installer
  2. Install my executable
  3. Install the FULL VISA development package
  4. Install the FULL NI-488.2 development package

Just to get a couple tools that I have come to rely on.

But hey my installer package is so much smaller!!!!

Thanks for nothing NI 😞

MAX is installed with the "...Configuration Support" installers. You don't have to install NIPM or do any of the other shenanigans you mentioned.

So for example, check this box:

or this one:

or this one:

I think installing any one of those will include MAX with the install.

I tried the VISA one and the 488.2 one today.. No cigar

No DAQmx devices so that is probably the one I will have to install

Well dang, that blows. I wonder what the difference is then if the "configuration support" installers don't include MAX? Your findings seem to go against this article too:

Maybe you can just install NI System Configuration?

Okay maybe one of those will install NI-MAX but it is a very stripped down MAX with none of the tools that I have come to rely on always being there.

Like you can't even set a VISA Alias in MAX unless you install the full VISA

I like to use the system configuration installer. "System Configuration includes Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), I/O Trace and Device Monitor."

Version 20.0 from the link does install NI Package Manager as well, I'm not sure about the other versions.
