Why would a control have the customize option dimmed out when it is right clicked?

If you put e.g. a type-def into a type-def, then you can edit both type-defs in two control editor windows at the same time. So principally it is possible have more than one instance of the control editor open. You just cannot crate a new type-def. At least with LabVIEW 7.1.1.

You can also get more than one instance of the control editor open if you use File>>New>>Custom Control.
